Founded in 1932, the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife is one of the oldest golf courses in Spain. After many renovations over the years, the current course, which has remained unchanged for almost three decades, is the shortest on the island, but probably the most difficult. And undoubtedly the one that will most shock visitors who don't know the island because of its climate and vegetation.
Located in a very cloudy area and surrounded by many large trees, these are undoubtedly its great feature and its greatest difficulty, along with some water hazardss and the out of bounds, very close to the fairway in many holes, so going straight in this field is a must, and losing the fairway means bogey as best in most cases.
The plot where the course is located is quite narrow and quite steep, so the pars 4 and 5 fairways are quite uneven, although if you are in the right place on the fairway there will always be good visibility of the green. The fairways are quite narrow, and the rough, specially in winter, is quite dense. All the holes are surrounded by tall trees, which in case of losing the fairway may well hinder our shot to the green. In addition to the trees, you must avoid the many water hazards, which are present on almost all holes, and the out of bounds especially on holes 1, 4, 5, 17 and 18.
The greens are not very difficult to read, but they have plenty of movement and are almost all very small, particularly the shorter holes ones, so if you get the not simple task of being on the fairway, you'll have to be very precise to reach the green and leave yourself a good chance of make a birdie.
The wind usually blows gently almost all year round coming from the northeast, which will cool down the atmosphere quite a bit in summer, but it will also lower the temperature even more in winter and often brings with it quite heavy rain and a dense fog, that can sometimes prevent the game from developing. The rainiest months the course will be quite wet, so the course will no longer be played so short, although it will also soften the greens a lot, which will help you to have more control over them.
In summary, the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife is a really complicated course, which requires a lot of strategy from the tee, where practically in any hole we can add many extra shots to our scorecard, in an environment, climate and vegetation that for sure will surprise the visitors. But precisely for that reason, it supposes a plus of interest for those that want to play in several courses of the island and to find the greater variety as possible on them.
